Gullah Traveling Theatre seeks $21,800 for Robert Smalls dinner‑theatre excursion and related programming

Denise Bullitt, representing the Gullah Traveling Theatre, asked the committee for $21,800 in ATAX support to produce a Robert Smalls dinner‑theatre and birthday celebration excursion scheduled for April 2027. Bullitt said the traveling theater routinely draws high out‑of‑market attendance — "almost 50%" in some years — and described a program designed to attract tour groups and senior travelers with two tour and show options per day.

Bullitt said the dinner‑theatre would be an intimate, targeted product (65–85 seats initially) and that the troupe would coordinate marketing with the county’s DMO and seek sponsorships to increase financial sustainability. Committee members pressed on seat capacity and sponsorship plans; Bullitt said the organization can add a second weekend or expand venue size if early demand supports it.
