Parents of swimmers urged trustees to consider the impact of an extended closure of the district aquatic center and to pursue every option to shorten the outage.
Jessica Applegate, who identified herself as the mother of two year‑round club swimmers, said the closure from Aug. 19 to Nov. 29 (as stated in her remarks) removes crucial indoor training time for children ages 5–17 and can affect competitive preparation for short‑course and high‑school seasons. "For many of these kids, swimming isn't just an extracurricular activity. It's their sport, their community," Applegate said. She asked the board to "explore every possible option to shorten [the closure]" and suggested interim accommodations if the issue is air‑conditioning parts delays.
Jennifer Wu, a Rockwall parent, highlighted the district 'race' swim program and said it serves more than 200 young athletes and has produced high‑level competitors, including an alum the presenter identified as an Olympian. Parents asked for transparency about timeline and for continued district support (facilities, staffing, pool access) while repairs proceed. Board members thanked the speakers and administration said someone from administration would follow up.
