Facilities and athletics staff presented a proposal to buy four mobile ball-stop netting systems to reduce the risk of balls leaving Allen Turf Field and reaching nearby residential yards about 10 yards from the fence.
"The proposed pro system would adjust up to 20 ft high and it is retractable so it goes from 10 to 20 ft allowing the nets to extend during athletic activities and retracted when not needed," a facilities representative said, describing a mobile system on wheels that can be moved through field gates and stored under the press box in winter.
Staff provided a vendor quote of $29,420 for equipment plus $2,500 shipping, bringing the total to $31,920, and said delivery is approximately 6–8 weeks. A warranty covers defective parts for one year; replacement parts are covered for up to five years if damage results from vandalism. Staff said the funding source is a bond designated for facilities improvements.
Board members asked about safety around elementary students using adjacent fields during recess, storage and setup responsibilities, and whether the nets would be placed inside or outside the fence. Staff said the nets can be positioned outside the play surface and that facilities personnel will train coaches on safe operation. One board member voiced concern that the appearance of poles could alarm neighbors but staff said the primary intent is perimeter protection.
Mr. Comfort moved the motion to approve the purchase (motion recorded in the transcript); the board approved the purchase by voice vote.
