Several attendees raised research questions about whether moving sixth graders into middle school harms academic outcomes and social development. One commenter summarized studies she had seen and argued that "the research is showing that that transition from to a middle school at the sixth grade... decreases math and reading scores and it's a sustained drop" compared with keeping students in a K–8 model. The resident asked what literature and external analyses the board was using to inform its deliberations.
Superintendent Boyd responded that the district had not contracted an outside firm for a literature review but would utilize available research and lessons from other Tennessee districts. He said the intent is to provide a balanced set of studies and local data to the board so it can weigh potential gains in teacher specialization against continuity benefits cited by K–8 supporters.
