Council adopted Resolution No. 21-16 to purchase and install an LED message display at Fairborn High School. Assistant City Manager Pete Bales said the City received three bids and staff recommended a 16 mm matrix sign proposal from Wilson Electronic Displays at a cost of $44,470. Bales said the school district has agreed to fund one-half of the sign purchase and the City's share will come from the Parks and Recreation Capital Improvement Fund, so no General Fund money will be used.
The sign is a 13-foot-tall, double-faced display. Bales said the active sign face is 32 square feet, larger than current zoning allows; the Board of Zoning Appeals granted a variance in February. The vendor provides a five-year parts warranty and two-year labor warranty. Bales said the sign can display full color and is capable of motion, but because of its roadside location animation will not be permitted; messages will move on and off the screen but remain stationary while displayed. Council approved the resolution unanimously and staff planned to place the order immediately to meet an August 1, 2016 installation target.
