Council approved Resolution No. 88-13 on Oct. 7 to join a cooperative salt purchase (SWOP 4G) administered with 95 other entities. Street & Equipment Maintenance Superintendent Sean Sink said Cargill was the low bidder and that the contract yields a $9.49-per-ton reduction from the prior year. He gave prices of $54.78 per ton dumped and $58.78 per ton piled when necessary and estimated the city could save about $18,900 if it uses the full budgeted tonnage.
Sink said piling costs rose by about $1 per ton but that overall prices remain significantly lower than last year. Council members asked whether additional salt at the same price could be purchased and about feasibility of in-house piling; staff said additional quantities can be purchased at the same price and that in-house piling is not economically feasible given equipment and maintenance costs. Council adopted the resolution.
