Gina Heimsbore reported a proof‑of‑concept study testing detection of delphinids in very high‑resolution satellite imagery. The team scanned managed‑care facilities first to learn appearance and best processing steps; among 91 images they identified 95 possible/probable dolphins and five definite dolphins but also 48 confounding objects. Wild‑area scans (33 images) produced fewer detections and many more confounders (255 recorded), including birds and floating debris, making confident identification more difficult.
Heimsbore emphasized the need for ground‑truthing: the next phase will pair satellite captures with simultaneous on‑water or drone surveys and leverage collaborators that can provide above‑pool video at managed care sites. She said early results show potential in very high‑quality images but that automated detection and robust abundance estimation in wild waters require paired field observations to quantify detectability and false positives. "We have proof of concept that we can in fact detect dolphins in very high resolution images... but it's challenging, especially in wild areas," she said.
