A series of parents and community members told the council on Sept. 22 that Mackle Park's playground and the adjacent splash pad have deteriorated and need an expedited plan and clearer communication. Multiple speakers said the splash pad has been unreliable after recent mechanical work and that older playground equipment is showing signs of advanced wear.
"We need a timeline. We need movement, and we just need answers on what's happening with the money that was already assessed in February," Sabrina Richards told the council, referencing a February direction to allocate about $2,000,000 toward replacing children's playgrounds at Mackle Park. Several speakers offered to serve on advisory committees and urged staff to present vendor options and expected replacement timelines.
Why it matters: parents said Mackle Park is the primary city amenity for young families and reported that safety issues—broken boards, missing mallets on instruments, degraded mulch—make the park less usable for toddlers. Councilors acknowledged earlier diversion of funds for a bridge repair and said the money could be redirected back to parks when bond or reimbursement steps are complete. Chair Palumbo told the parents their voices had been heard and that the council will address the item later in the agenda that was swapped to an earlier slot.
