The Hyattsville Police Department described initial deployment of four automated stop‑sign camera trailers in school zones and said the devices are in a voluntary 30‑day warning period through Sept. 30; citations are scheduled to begin Oct. 1.
Chief Towers explained the trailers incorporate radar and local reviews: "These are mobile, so we can move them around to different locations," he said, adding that footage and supplementary radar data will be reviewed by civilian staff before citations are issued and that residents who receive a citation can ask for internal review or dismissal.
Staff said the county approved a list of 36 potential locations for rotation and that cameras will be redeployed once compliance is achieved at a given intersection. Councilors asked about striping and signage and whether camera locations would be prioritized for paint and markings; staff said the four currently deployed sites were updated before the warning period began.
Why it matters: The program seeks to improve safety in school zones and other high‑risk intersections, but it raised community questions about signage, enforcement, appeals and future expansion to additional locations.
