Prince George's County planners and consultants from Stantec presented the draft final Hyattsville Climate Action Plan at the council meeting, describing a yearlong stakeholder process and a focus on transportation, buildings & energy, green space/stormwater and municipal operations.
Anu Nair of the county and Nadia Vogt of Stantec said the plan—developed through county Planning Assistance to Municipalities and Communities (PAMC) funding—builds on county analysis and local engagement, including a University of Maryland survey with 431 responses. The consultants said transportation and land use represent roughly 48% of the community's emissions, with buildings accounting for roughly 43%.
Among the top recommended actions are walking and biking safety projects, building energy benchmarking, a regional energy navigator hub, tree‑canopy expansion, neighborhood stormwater stewardship, and a municipal climate dashboard and fleet electrification plan. The consultants said the prioritized actions could yield a roughly 10% reduction by 2030 (relative to business‑as‑usual) and larger gains by 2050 with sustained action.
Why it matters: The plan lays out funding and partnership pathways (county and state grants, grants readiness) and a near‑term implementation agenda aligned with capital budgeting and grant strategies; the council and staff will use the plan to pursue grants and integrate climate priorities into capital projects.
