Sedgwick County Fire District 1 said it will team with the American Red Cross and the Oak Lawn Community Wellness Hub to install free smoke alarms and replace batteries for Oak Lawn residents during Fire Prevention Week.
"Our goal is to install at least 75 of these smoke alarms in these homes," Fire Marshal Brad Crisp told commissioners, adding that the program will run the mornings of Oct. 5 and 7 and the afternoons of Oct. 8 and 9. The effort includes testing existing alarms and offering appointments through 211 or the county website.
Crisp said the program is possible because of the Red Cross's generosity and urged the county to spread the word. A short video shown to the commission highlighted the program's message: "No cost. No catch. Just peace of mind." County communications staff Nicole Gibbs introduced the program and noted outreach and partner coordination.
The program is presented as an injury- and death-prevention effort: Crisp cited research that working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by about 50 percent. Officials encouraged residents to schedule installations and to watch for county and partner outreach posts.
