The Miami County Commission unanimously approved a resolution to increase the county’s motor‑vehicle service fee from $5 to $10 on a three‑year sunset designed to offset a growing county subsidy for motor‑vehicle operations.
A county staff representative told commissioners the motor‑vehicle operation cost for 2025, including personnel and benefits, was a little north of $622,000 while revenue from operations was about $382,000, “leaving the county to subsidize the rest of the motor vehicle operations,” said Cindy Ming, director of finance. Officials said the state opened a temporary option to permit counties to charge up to $10 to help cover costs.
Commissioners said the change would reduce reliance on ad valorem property‑tax dollars that have covered the shortfall. “This will help offset the cost,” the county staff member said, urging a move away from subsidizing a state function with local general‑fund money. A motion to adopt the resolution passed 5–0.
The measure is timed to a state three‑year authorization. County staff will monitor motor‑vehicle fund balances and report results during the next budget cycle to determine whether the fee reduction meaningfully lowers property‑tax transfers, Ming said.
