The Miami County Commission voted to charge a $15 county service fee for driver‑license renewals at county facilities after hearing staff estimates of staffing costs and transaction volumes.
County staff said the driver‑license renewal operation handles roughly 4,000–5,000 transactions annually and that a single employee with benefits costs about $72,000 a year. “With the employee roughly with benefits around $72,000 a year, you would need to charge, at a minimum, $14.35 for that,” said Cindy Ming, director of finance. Officials noted driver‑license renewals occur every four or six years depending on age and that the county provides a courtesy service that some neighboring counties do not.
One commissioner moved to set the fee at $20 to more fully eliminate subsidy, but the motion failed for lack of a second. A subsequent motion to set the county fee at $15 — moved by Commissioner Vickery and seconded by Commissioner Vaughn — passed unanimously. Staff said the motor‑vehicle and driver‑license functions would be monitored in the budget cycle to determine whether the fee reduces ad valorem transfers and to keep transparency over how any freed funds are spent.
County staff also noted an alternative is to discontinue local driver‑license services entirely and rely on full‑service state facilities, an option some neighboring counties have chosen. The change takes effect under county authorization and will be reviewed during future budget hearings.
