The Zoning Board granted a variance on Sept. 22 allowing the homeowner at 30 Edward Street to retain an expanded paved driveway that exceeds the 24-foot maximum width, citing safety and neighborhood parking constraints.
Homeowner Carllette told the board the configuration — which includes an existing paved area that makes the driveway effectively wider than allowed — enables vehicles to park fully on private property and keeps the roadway clear for emergency vehicles on a tight, partially one-way street. The board received a neighbor letter in support stating the change would improve safety and not obstruct sight lines.
Board members noted parking is a district-wide issue and found the proposal consistent with neighborhood character and public interest. The variance was approved with a direction to coordinate any final work with the Department of Public Works.
The chair said the applicant needs to follow DPW instructions for any curb or roadway work.
