The Englewood City Council on Wednesday voted 5–1 to appoint Aaron Martinez to fill the District 3 vacancy, selecting him over several candidates and avoiding a special election.
Council supporters cited Martinez’s experience on the Planning & Zoning Commission and service on an affordable housing task force as reasons he is prepared to step into the seat. Mayor Pro Tem Steve Ward said he ranked Martinez first and that "Mr. Martinez best represents what District 3 chose to vote for" in the prior election. Several council members told the meeting they were impressed with Martinez’s knowledge of the budget, the strategic plan and upcoming priorities such as city center redevelopment and the city manager search.
Member Russell voted against the appointment, saying he had received calls from District 3 residents and that Barbara Chumley (also referred to in the transcript as "Barb Chumley") was the candidate he believed best reflected the district’s preference. "The person that stood out to be the absolute top person was Barb Chumley," Russell said during discussion. The clerk recorded five ayes and one nay; the council’s tally was Mayor Pro Tem Ward — Aye; Member Bethel — Aye; Member Praying — Aye; Member Russell — Nay; Member Summerson — Aye; Mayor Sierra — Aye.
The clerk said staff will notify Martinez of the appointment and that he is scheduled to be sworn in at the council’s Oct. 5 meeting if he accepts. The council adjourned after the formal appointment.
(Action: motion to appoint Aaron Martinez carried 5–1; Mr. Martinez to be notified and sworn in Oct. 5 if he accepts.)
