Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsakis told the General Assembly that Greece stands with Ukraine in the face of Russia's full-scale aggression, condemned attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, and called for diplomacy to deliver an immediate ceasefire and a lasting peace.
"The Ukrainian people have shown extraordinary courage defending their freedom and Greece continuously stands with them. We strongly condemn attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure," Mitsakis said, urging that Ukraine must have a decisive say in its own future and that Europe should be present at negotiations.
He also turned to Sudan, describing the nearly four-year conflict as causing a staggering humanitarian catastrophe with continuing reports of war crimes and regional instability. Mitsakis urged that foreign interference cease, pressed for a credible Sudanese-led political process, and called on the European Union to play a more active role in assisting a political solution and humanitarian needs.
Why it matters: The comments reaffirm Greece’s diplomatic posture on two major conflicts—European security in Ukraine and the humanitarian consequences of Sudan's civil war—signaling support for diplomacy, humanitarian assistance, and a stronger EU role in stabilization.
