Brett Brummond, an attorney with the Goldstein Environmental Law Firm, said at a community meeting that Woodlands Club Holdings, LLLP has applied to the City of Tamarac to designate four parcels of the former Woodlands golf course as a Green Reuse Area under Florida's Brownfields redevelopment program.
"This meeting today is a community meeting associated with the property owner's request to the city of Tamarac to designate their property as the Woodlands Club green reuse area pursuing the Florida's Brownfields redevelopment act," Brummond said. He told attendees the Brownfields designation process requires public outreach and opportunities for comment but is focused on encouraging cleanup and reuse of sites where contamination has impeded redevelopment.
Brummond said the designation does not reopen earlier development approvals and that questions about the development itself would be passed to the developer if not answered at the meeting. He described the Brownfields approach as pairing rehabilitation (cleanup) with redevelopment so land-disturbing activities provide the best chance to address contaminants.
The meeting included logistical details about notices: Brummond said the property owner published notice in the Sun Sentinel, mailed nearby residents and homeowners' associations, posted signs on the property and used the city's social channels to reach impacted neighbors. He also said environmental reports would be posted in Broward County's regulatory file and circulated by the project team.
Next steps described by the presenter include continuing the designation process, public hearings with the city and the availability of the site assessment and remediation plans for public review.
