Brummond told the room that remediation will be carried out as part of the redevelopment rather than before it, because land-disturbing activities provide the best opportunities to address contaminated soils.
"By participating in this program, the Florida Brownfields redevelopment program, you are agreeing to conduct environmental cleanup and redevelopment," he said, and added that the rehabilitation (cleanup) is a component of redevelopment and the two occur in concert. He said Broward County serves as the regulatory agency overseeing the work and that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will also have an oversight role.
The presenter said environmental reports and the county-approved site assessment are available in Broward County's regulatory file called Envirose and that the project team will circulate the presentation and reports for public review. He emphasized that cleanup will be done under regulator oversight and that the designation program helps facilitate remediation tied to redevelopment.
