At the start of the public-comment portion, Bridget Sipes told the commission she visited the Hobbs Animal Shelter and found "several areas of concern," urging officials to take practical steps to improve conditions and outcomes for dogs in city care. She urged the city to create an Amazon wish list linked to the city's social media pages for immediate donations of beds, blankets, toys and cleaning supplies and to make reunification a priority by checking microchips and contacting owners.
Sipes said volunteers and staff create a welcoming environment that improves adoption outcomes and fosters foster placements. "These animals cannot speak for themselves. I'm here to speak for them," she said, asking the city to take the concerns seriously and work toward pragmatic improvements.
The commission acknowledged her remarks and thanked her for the recommendations; no formal action was taken during the meeting on the item.
