Tim Kallai, reporting for the Access Committee, told the KNA that the committee plans monthly meetings in 2015 and outlined four priorities: (1) define and verify mauka trails above Kuhio Highway within the Kilauea district; (2) follow up on the county plan to fence and maintain the Larsen/Lepeuli access and develop a KNA position; (3) determine whether current development on the old Moloaa Road affects public access rights; and (4) continue efforts concerning the Kahili quarry road, the P-1 estuary easement and the Kilauea Falls trail.
Kallai also reported that Councilmember Mason Chock is drafting a resolution to retain county funding to study the history and secure legal representation for the lateral alaloa trail in the Kilauea district. The committee’s narrowed meeting schedule and enumerated priorities aim to concentrate volunteer effort on the most time-sensitive access issues.
