Mayor Sheldon Neely announced that eight new recruits have joined the Flint Police Department and will begin police academy training, a step he described as part of reducing overall violence in the city. "For the 1st time in, more than a decade, we are moving into full complement of police officers here inside the city of Flint," Neely said on WFLT.
A narration during the program named Chief Terrence Green, Sergeant Paul Spann and recruitment director Lieutenant Ron Dixon as participants in the announcement. Chief Green told the program the new class will begin training immediately and is expected to graduate in December; Neely added the department is preparing for another academy class in January with additional recruits already signed up. The mayor framed the hires as part of a broader safety strategy to strengthen neighborhood policing and reduce gun violence.
