District sustainability leader Dr. Michael Atzby honored as Sustainable Jersey Sustainability Hero

Board member Miss Samson announced that Dr. Michael Atzby, leader of the district's green team, was named a Sustainable Jersey Sustainability Hero for April 2026. Miss Samson said Dr. Atzby's leadership helped all 24 schools in the district achieve Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification and that 11 schools earned Digital School Star recognition. She credited student-led initiatives and specific achievements, saying the district redistributed "more than 184,000 pounds of food avoiding waste in 1 year" and collected "more than 1,000 pounds of crayons" for children in hospitals.

The board offered congratulations; the recognition was presented as an acknowledgment of district environmental leadership and student involvement rather than a board action requiring a vote.
