Community groups reported success with local environmental efforts and are seeking partnership with state agencies for expansion.
"The oyster shell collection on the beach is now closed. It was very successful," Camille Giuliano said, adding that VOBEC hopes to expand a community composting program to markets and restaurants to keep organic waste on the island.
Representatives from Ocean Beach youth and community organizations emphasized the potential to convert restaurant and market food waste into compost that can be used locally and to reduce the volume of material shipped off the island. The board said it has given preliminary permission for a Department of Environmental Conservation presentation and that staff will try to schedule an in‑person DEC meeting for trustees and the public.
Community volunteers also invited residents to join a coordinated beach cleanup at 1:30 p.m. the same day.
