Public witnesses — including Dr. Mecca Nelson, a Gold Star spouse and advocate, and Anthony, a father who lost his son to suicide — told the council that formal recognition and targeted supports for families bereaved by suicide would both honor loss and improve access to services.
Dr. Nelson asked the council to convene roundtables and to consider programmatic changes such as a military-connected family business certification and stronger, confidential complaint procedures for organizations that serve veterans. "Recognition tells a family, we see you. Meaningful support tells them, we will stand beside you," she told the committee. The administration signaled support for Resolution 493: Commissioner Mata stated, "The administration supports resolution 0493, which would declare April 7 as White Star Family Day in the city of New York."
Witnesses also described concrete barriers for family members with disabilities, the need for accessible home modifications and transportation, and gaps in outreach that leave family members unaware they qualify for services. The committee agreed to accept written materials for the record and to explore convening a roundtable with White Star and Silver Star families.
