David Nanopoulos, identified in the briefing as head of the Treaty Section in the Office of Legal Affairs, told reporters the annual treaty event will take place during High-Level Week from Tuesday '22 to Friday '25 next week. "The theme of this year event is promoting multilateral treaties, safeguarding humanity," he said, urging states to use their New York presence to take action on treaties deposited with the secretary-general.
Nanopoulos described the depository role of the secretary-general — custodial care of treaty texts and facilitation of state participation — and said the event has been organized each year since 2000. He invited UN-accredited press to attend ceremonies in the 'Kuwaiti boat area' and said daily updates and images will be posted on treaties.un.org and distributed by email.
