Commissioners push to fund a site design plan for county recreation parcel

Commission members agreed to prioritize a short list of low-cost recreation projects for a county-owned property and to seek grant money to pay for a professional site design.

A committee member who led the discussion said the goal is "to get our application ready for the spring" and proposed identifying three grant opportunities the commission could target. The speaker noted Dominion runs a grant program that closes twice a year and suggested the commission prepare for the spring cycle.

The commission set interim deadlines: each commissioner will submit a ranked top-10 priority list by October 10, the commission will meet October 20 to consolidate a top-5, and the board will seek permission at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 12 to apply for grants. The commission also agreed to research potential grant partners and to identify organizations (501(c)(3) partners) that could legally apply on the commission's behalf.

Next steps: a commissioner volunteered to take the lead on grant research and to compile possible funding sources and partner organizations for discussion at the October meeting.
