Residents described a summer surge in trucks driving and parking on Atlantic Drive and nearby beach access points, telling the Town Board that the volume and behavior of beach‑driving vehicles pose immediate safety and environmental risks.
Several callers and in‑room speakers said a long‑standing sign that restricted vehicles from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the busy season had been changed, allowing more vehicles on to the beach. "It was closed all summer until August 15th ... The number of trucks on this crowded beach put our families at risk," said Martha Green. Martin Sampson and others urged the town to adopt the same seasonal restrictions imposed earlier at another beach, citing that Atlantic Drive serves roughly 130 houses and narrow access points where emergency vehicles could be impeded.
Speakers described dune erosion, increased ruts from vehicle tires and direct threats to wildlife and children. One caller estimated 50 to 60 trucks on the beach during busy weekends; others cited counts reaching into the thousands during the season. Residents asked the board to restore seasonal prohibitions, run enforcement, and coordinate with state agencies to preserve the primary dune and public safety.
