Judy Morgan, executive director of the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, told the commission the center is preparing to operate the former county senior center under a new lease once the city and county finalize agreements. "We're excited," Morgan said, and described recent program growth including resistance classes with 20–25 participants, expanded bingo and monthly community events.
Commissioners and staff outlined the timeline: the city council is expected to consider the lease/contract first and the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to act on Sept. 29 to relinquish county operational control and transition services to the county rec center. Staff said only county‑owned kitchen equipment would be moved and that most building inventory is city owned; commissioners asked for a list of repairs and inventory to guide fundraising and equipment donations.
Speakers also suggested creating a member emergency fund, ramping up grant writing, and exploring joint programming with parks and recreation. Staff supplied operational numbers to frame the discussion: staff cited an operating budget and a general‑fund contribution for the senior day program during the discussion to aid planning.
Why it matters: Local leadership expects the transfer to allow the senior center to expand services quickly, but several operational details (equipment inventory, lease terms, and funding) remain to be finalized before full operations resume.
