The Isle of Wight County Director of Transportation (identified in the meeting as Miss Oliver) updated the Board of Supervisors on the Smithfield intersection improvement project at Route 10 and Route 258, describing a design that adds a through lane, lengthens left‑turn lanes and improves pedestrian access. Oliver said the project will reconfigure the park‑and‑ride with EV charging stalls, create a bus loop routed through the lot, add sidewalks to fill gaps along the corridor and construct stormwater facilities that will pipe runoff to a new pond near Great Springs Road.
Oliver told the board right‑of‑way acquisition and utility relocation work are wrapping up and the project is close to a “final plan set”; staff hope to advertise for construction in about 90 days. She estimated roughly 18 months for overall construction, with about 12 months of in‑lane roadway work. The design includes negotiated entrance changes for adjacent commercial properties and a bid alternate to explore brick pavers for sidewalks. “We are hopefully about 90 days from actually advertising for construction,” Oliver said.
