The Manzanita City Council on Aug. 28 moved to extend an offer to Jennifer Watkins to become the city’s next manager, with councilors saying the appointment is subject to successful contract negotiations and a subsequent public meeting to review the contract.
"I move to extend an offer to Jennifer Watkins to be our next city manager pending successful contract negotiations," Councilor Anton said when making the motion, which the council recorded as seconded. Mayor Brenda called for a vote and council members voiced approval; councilor Linda later described the selection as unanimous.
Councilors said the next step will be contract negotiations with Watkins followed by a public meeting at which the council will review the terms and take a formal vote. Mayor Brenda said the public meeting may be held at the council’s September session, depending on timing of negotiations. The council did not provide the final contract terms on the record at the special session.
Councilors and staff described the action on Aug. 28 as announcing the council’s first choice rather than completing a hiring process. Councilor Brad thanked the public and panels that participated in the recruitment effort, calling the selection "one of the most important decisions a city council makes," and urged residents to contact councilors with questions about the process.
