The Governing Board approved Part 2 of proposed policy and procedure revisions Sept. 17, adopting multiple changes ranging from open-meeting posting options to parental-rights procedures and interscholastic athletics language. The package included a recommendation to select Option 1 for the parents' rights procedure and to approve policies without adding an authorization option for weapons-detection systems until the district has a demonstrated system and understands its operation.
Board members discussed specific wording in the athletics policy; President Kimball said she would prefer the language use ‘coed’ instead of ‘mixed’ for designation of teams: “I would prefer to see coed on that.” Superintendent Popalardo cautioned that any final wording must also align with statute and the trust language. On the parents' rights procedure, Popalardo advised taking Option 1 and noted recordkeeping requirements: “I would tell you to take option 1... under state statute, there's only certain questions you are allowed to ask students. And then once you ask the students, you have to keep a record for amount of years, which I believe is 7.”
The board voted 5-0 to adopt the package with the selected options and with direction to revisit weapons-detection authorization after purchase and demonstration.
