The Newport City Council approved administration's request to accept additional Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funds made available through FY2025.
Administration said the city may accept up to $6,015,225 in additional federal funds after Middletown opted not to pursue available funds and Portsmouth reduced its scope. The package could raise Newport's available project funds by up to $7,520,000 when including an approximately $1,500,000 local match, administration said.
"Following Portsmouth's reduction in the scope and budget of its projects and Middletown's decision not to pursue the available funds, Newport has the opportunity to add up to $7,520,000 in project funds to its allocation," administration stated in the meeting.
Council approved the authorization; administration said the acceptance was processed under the consent calendar and no additional fiscal impact was recorded at the meeting.
The funds are intended for regional safety projects under the SS4A program; councilors did not record a roll‑call tally for the vote in the transcript.
