The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors convened to read precinct-level returns from the Sept. 8 Dubuque Community School special election, with officials reading totals from polling places across the county. Staff read precinct returns including Prairie State Blind ("Prairie State Blind, total ballots cast, 1,356," a staff member said) and Dubuque West Campus (690 ballots), among others.
Officials read candidate tallies in several precincts. For example, Prairie State Blind was reported as Jim Prochaska 503, Mike Hoskins 488, Jeremy Valen 275, write-ins 8. At Dubuque West Campus the board recorded Jim Prochaska 212, Mike Hoskins 308, Jeremy Valen 102, write-ins 5; the public measure at West Campus was read as yes 400, no 287. The readings consisted of precinct-by-precinct counts entered into the record; no formal certification or final aggregate winner was declared on the record during the session.
The board’s reading of returns was procedural: staff members and the chair read totals precinct by precinct and answered brief clarification questions about line items. After concluding the tallying, a member moved to adjourn and the board voted by voice to close the meeting.
