The Select Board voted to approve a temporary permit to occupy a single parking space on Adams Street for consolidated dumpsters, a solution that town staff and downtown merchants have negotiated after more than two years of study. The permit will expire April 30 and is subject to annual renewal and review by town administration and safety staff.
Business owner Ted Geancopoulos (7 South Bottling Kitchen) described operational hazards caused by the current placement: "The dumpsters are in a dangerous area as I have to maneuver my Ford 2 50 box truck just by them to make it into the space, and I run the risk of damaging my property along with damaging dumpsters and trash cans." He suggested relocating the dumpster corral slightly to improve truck access while acknowledging the need for central access for multiple buildings.
Board members expressed competing priorities: the town’s redesign of the street and new sidewalks altered long‑standing delivery patterns, creating reliance interests for merchants, while residents emphasized odor, aesthetics and pedestrian quality‑of‑life. The board approved the permit by motion with a friendly amendment asking town administration to meet with the affected business owners to explore tractor‑trailer access and to include residents in relevant discussions about any potential relocation. The administration will return with any recommended adjustments ahead of the April review date.
